About Sunterra Farms Greenhouse
Sunterra Farms Greenhouse Ltd. is part of the Sunterra Farms group, a third-generation Alberta agribusiness. Our greenhouse facility in Acme produces commercial volumes of premium tomatoes year-round, supplying retail customers across Western Canada including Sunterra Markets. We operate hydroponic / substrate-based growing systems with computerized climate control and an active integrated pest management (IPM) program.
Position summary
The Tomato Team Supervisor leads daily greenhouse production operations for an assigned crop area. The role is central to product quality, yield, worker safety, and IPM execution. The supervisor reports to the Growing Team and directs a crew of 20 crop workers.
Key responsibilities
• Plan, schedule, and supervise daily greenhouse operations: planting, training, pruning, leaf removal and lowering.
• Lead crews of 20 crop workers; deliver toolbox talks, training, and onboarding for new hires.
• Work along with the IPM Coordinator: scout for pests (whitefly, thrips, russet mite, leaf miner), release beneficial insects, coordinate spot treatments with the growing team.
• Monitor crop development against weekly targets (truss number, fruit load, yield); flag deviations to growers.
• Maintain accurate crop and labour records (paper and digital).
• Enforce biosecurity, food safety, and Occupational Health & Safety protocols at all times.
• Provide bilingual (English/Spanish) supervision and training to the production crew.
Required qualifications
All applicants must demonstrate the following. Sunterra will document compliance with each requirement during the screening process.
1. Minimum three (4) years of experience supervising commercial greenhouse vegetable production, with at least two (2) years specifically in indeterminate fruiting crops (tomato, cucumber, or sweet pepper).
2. Demonstrated experience leading and training crews of eight (10) or more production workers in a greenhouse, nursery, or comparable intensive horticulture environment.
3. Working knowledge of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for greenhouse production, including release and monitoring of beneficial insects (e.g., Encarsia formosa)
4. Hands-on experience with hydroponic or substrate (rockwool or coco-coir) growing systems and irrigation/fertigation scheduling.
5. Experience operating a commercial greenhouse climate control system (Argus, Priva, Hoogendoorn, or comparable) and interpreting set-points.
6. Working proficiency in spoken Spanish, sufficient to direct, train, and ensure the safety of greenhouse production crew members whose primary working language is Spanish. (This is an operational safety requirement, not a preference.)
