Getting ready to apply
Your resume
Lead with your recent experience and the skills the job asks for. Volunteer work, seasonal work, land-based skills and roles in your community (coaching, events, caring for family or Elders) are real experience. Include them and describe what you did.
References
Line up two or three people who can speak to your work, such as a past supervisor, teacher, coach or community leader. Ask them first.
Interviews
Many first interviews now happen by phone or video. Test your camera and sound beforehand, find a quiet spot, and have the job listing in front of you.
Free help with your job search
Through Canada’s Indigenous Skills and Employment Training (ISET) Program, First Nations organizations across the country deliver employment and training services, often including help with resumes, training costs, safety tickets and getting to work. Ask your band office or local employment centre who delivers ISET services for your Nation or region. See our directory of ISET organizations across Canada.
