Every year the Mint celebrates Multiculturalism Day in June, and the theme for 2019 was National Indigenous History. Employees from both locations in Ottawa and Winnipeg were invited to view a special display highlighting coins with Indigenous stories and themes.
The Mint continued its tradition of celebrating cultural diversity through its product development and marketing efforts. Following are some examples:
Over the past year, the Mint achieved extraordinary attention as it celebrated Canada’s diversity and Canadians: First Nations, Canada’s Official Languages, Pride, and many more special Canadians and historic milestones such as the Canadian peacekeeping, wildlife, festivals, sports and entertainment and indigenous art. Precious metals, their ageless allure, and humanity’s endless pursuit, are the reasons why the Mint’s products remain at the pinnacle of collecting year after year.
The Mint displayed its first feather-shaped coin showing reverence to both the eagle and its feather – two symbols that have special cultural and spiritual significance to Indigenous peoples in Canada.
In the pursuit of its vision: “delivering excellence… through our customer-driven businesses, our talented people and the value we add to Canada and Canadians” the Mint will continue to ensure that employment equity is a fundamental part of its daily practices. Women, Indigenous peoples and visible minorities are well represented overall and the Mint recognizes the need to concentrate on special initiatives to facilitate entry and promotion of those designated groups, specifically persons with disabilities and Indigenous peoples.
It is a Mint practice, where relevant, to provide the translation of product literature for a specific coin into a language other than Canada’s two official languages. Depending on the product and cultural context: Traditional Chinese and Michif. For example:
For the Chinese lunar calendar, coins that are produced over a 12-year cycle are sold with numismatic certificates that included information in Chinese (Traditional) in addition to Canada’s two official languages.
In addition to English and French, a coin commemorating Métis leader Louis Riel and his legacy in Manitoba was engraved with inscriptions in Michif, the official language of the Métis Nation.
