The Oyster Farm Manager is responsible for the strategic oversight and execution of all aspects of the oyster operation, from grow-out on multiple leases to ensuring final product quality through cleaning, grading, and packaging. The role focuses on maximizing production efficiency, ensuring strict adherence to compliance standards, managing staff, and ensuring maintenance of all mechanized and marine infrastructure.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The Oyster Farm Manager oversees all business and operational aspects, ensuring the health and viability of stock across all sites. The main operational aspects overseen by the Oyster Farm Manager include:
● General Management-Ensure farm operations are the most efficient possible.
● Infrastructure-Oversee the farm production systems, equipment and boats, ensuring infrastructure is operating as expected, and assigning installation, operation and maintenance responsibilities to the appropriate staff.
● Oyster Farming-Ensure animal health is being monitored and address any concerns with animal health (i.e. identifying presence of parasites such as MSX), ensuring production goals are being met.
● Coordinate Harvest-Ensure oyster cultivation and harvesting equipment is maintained and oysters are safely harvested and brought to the on-land primary processing facility.
Processing and Quality Control
The Oyster Farm Manager is also responsible for overseeing harvest and post-harvest preparation of oysters to meet premium market and regulatory standards. This includes:
● All aspects of growing oysters and maintaining the farms leases including seed deployment, grading, reducing densities, flipping, and harvest.
● Overseeing the processing of the oysters in the Farm’s onsite processing plant including sorting, grading, storage, redeployment, and coordinating sales.
Administration and Personnel
The Oyster Farm Manager is the main contact point for all employees and is responsible for administration, personnel, and finances.
● Staff Management
○ Supervise staff, ensuring a positive work environment that is safe and productive.
○ Directly oversee and support the Oyster Farm Oyster Farm Field Supervisor and Oyster Farm Oyster Farm Processing Plant Supervisor.
○ Ensure compliance with all licensing and regulatory requirements for SOI leases and primary processing.
Education and Experience
● Completion of secondary school is preferred.
● A college diploma in aquaculture or a related field or several years of experience in fishing or aquaculture operations is preferred.
● Management and/or business training is an asset.
● Prior experience in aquaculture or relevant marine experience is essential.
● Experience operating marine vessels and has obtained relevant certification (SVOP, MED DVS, ROC-M, and MBFA.)
● Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English.
Technical and Soft Skills
● Financial experience in managing budgets and developing business strategies.
● Ability to work in a fast-paced environment where problem solving, troubleshooting, and innovating skills are essential.
Physical and Work Demands
● Must be comfortable working in a marine environment, on the water, in all kinds of weather conditions.
● Requires a flexible approach to working, as overtime and weekend work will be required to meet the demands of the job.
Salary and Compensation Range
The salary range of the Oyster Farm Manager role is consistent with education and experience. This is a full-time, permanent role.
