The Oyster Farm General Manager (OFGM) is responsible for the strategic oversight and execution of all aspects of the Paqtnkek Oyster Farm. This role ensures the project’s overall success by managing and coordinating administrative tasks, supporting staff, and achieving long-term goals in conjunction with the Oyster Farm. The Oyster Farm General Manager oversees all business and operational aspects of the oyster farm.
Strategic and Operational Management
Develop long-term farm plans and set annual goals.
Ensure the oyster farm is operating efficiently.
Support the Oyster Farm Field Manager in operation and maintenance responsibilities to the appropriate staff.
Ensure animal health is being monitored and address any concerns with animal health (i.e. identifying presence of parasites such as MSX) in coordination with provincial authorities.
Coordinate product sales and equipment purchases.
Administration and Financial Oversight
The OFGM is the main contact point for the Paqtnkek Oyster Farm, and is responsible for administration, personnel, finances, and proposal development.
Supervise, provide direction, and evaluate the performance of the Oyster Farm Field Manager and farm staff.
Directly oversee and support the Oyster Farm Field Manager.
Apply for permits and leases with Federal and Provincial departments and ensure compliance with all licensing and environmental regulations.
Manage budgeting with Paqtnkek Mi’kmaq Nation Finance Department.
Ensure compliance in safety procedures and all relevant codes of practice.
Education and Experience
5+ years of leadership experience in fisheries, aquaculture, or related fields is preferred.
Post-secondary education such as a college diploma in aquaculture or a related field is preferred.
Experience working within a First Nations community or organization is a strong asset.
Management and/or business training is an asset.
Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English.
Technical Knowledge and Skills
Financial experience in managing budgets and developing business strategies is an asset.
Proficiency in MS Office applications or similar.
Excellent proposal writing, reporting, and data analysis skills is an asset.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment where problem solving, troubleshooting, and innovating skills are essential.
Salary and Compensation Range
The salary range of the Oyster Farm Manager role is consistent with education and experience. This is a full-time, permanent role.
