SUMMARY
The Human Relational Services Generalist will support the HRS Manager with the recruitment, onboarding and retention of employees to support the growth and development of Nigig Gamik. This position will help build and foster the employment relationships needed to successfully implement and operationalize Nigig-Nibi-ki-win within Nigig Gamik.
The HRS Generalist will work collaboratively with the HRS Manager, and others within the department collaboratively, to review policies, review files for compliance with federal regulation and regularly review HRIS and training programs, as might be required for employees within the organization, often taking the lead on initiatives brought forward.
This position is also primarily responsible for assisting in the recruitment and retention efforts at Nigig Gamik.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Recruitment and onboarding
• Collaborates with HRS Manager to develop job descriptions for newly created positions within the department.
• Undertake tasks with respect to recruitment, interviews, and hiring new staff.
• Under the direction of the HRS Manager, assists in developing and executing the onboarding process for newly hired staff, including collecting required documentation.
• Is largely responsible for the set-up of new employees within the HRIS and LMS systems as well as benefit enrollment, including orientation information and training.
• Undertakes the coordination of orientation efforts within the team and for Nigig Gamik.
2. HRS Development
• Assists in analyzing trends in compensation and benefits programs to attract and retain employees.
• Facilitates onboarding processes for new hires and collects feedback from staff.
• Provides first line of contact for staff members who may have work/workplace-related concerns.
• Identifies possible solutions with HRS Manager and follow up as necessary.
• Assists in the development of new Human Relational Services policies and/or assists in the review of existing policy for relevance and alignment.
• Supports and implements workplace safety measures, including participating on the Workplace Health & Safety Committee.
• Reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance with employment laws and regulations.
3. Administrative
• Maintains all employee data is up-to-date by tracking via HRIS and LMS systems, alerting applicable management/staff when training must be completed/renewed, documents are required or sign-offs are missing.
• Conducts files reviews for personnel and follow-sup on missing documentation as necessary either with staff or management as appropriate.
• Schedule meetings, appraisals, orientation and or other training as might be required.
• Orders required equipment for new staff, liaising with IT for account set-up.
• Assists with back-up coverage to scheduling.
4. Performance Evaluations
• Undertake tasks with respect to regular performance evaluations.
• Works with HRS Manager as appropriate to assist with the investigation into allegations of wrongdoing, and the discipline and termination of employees in accordance with developed policies.
5. Other
• Performs other HRS related tasks as assigned by the HRS Manager.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Due to the sensitive nature of personal information received and managed in this area of operations, the HRS Generalist is required to keep all information confidential. This position requires you to sit and stand for various periods of time and may involve travel from time to time.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
1. Basic Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field.
• Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation, or working towards, is considered an asset.
• Minimum of two (2) year of human resources experience.
• Experience working with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis (FNIM) people in a community-based setting would be considered an asset.
2. Rated Requirements:
Knowledge
• Indigenous knowledge, in particular understanding of Algonquin practices and values.
• Knowledge of employment laws, regulations, and standards.
• Understanding of best practices within the field of Human Resources.
• Understanding of legal and reporting requirements of benefit administration, including remittance would be an asset.
• Knowledge of local, regional, and provincial Indigenous and non-Indigenous services.
• Knowledge of Child Welfare legislation, mandates, standards of practice, policies, and procedures such as the Child, Youth and Family Services Act, 2017, Bill C-92, Jordan’s Principle, Customary Care, etc.
Abilities
• Develop any forms and templates required for recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of employees.
• Develop and review policies to create a safe, healthy, and supportive workplace.
• Communicate any workplace or performance issues to employees.
• Communicate effectively with external service providers.
• Coordinate across various teams to effectively respond to staffing needs.
• Proficiency in the use of computers and various software programs.
