The Opportunity: Indigenous Health & Safety Trainee
The Indigenous Health & Safety Trainee supports the development and maintenance of a strong safety culture across all construction sites. In this early-career role, you will work under the guidance of experienced Health & Safety professionals to build core competencies in construction safety, documentation, communication, and hazard identification.
You will be onsite daily, gaining hands-on exposure to construction activities, equipment, and safety protocols, while assisting in inspections, observations, and safety initiatives. This role requires a motivated, detail-oriented individual with a strong willingness to learn, the ability to communicate effectively, and a commitment to fostering safe work environments for all employees and subcontractors.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
(No previous experience needed, training will be provided for all tasks).
Support daily safety activities under the mentorship of the Health & Safety Manager and the Site Supervisor.
Learn to use SiteDocs to review safety documentation, worker forms, and subcontractor submissions.
Participate in safety meetings and help with note-taking and preparation of simple reports.
Assist with new worker orientations and help ensure required documents are completed.
Learn how to collect and track basic health and safety statistics.
Help update training materials and toolbox talks.
Visit worksites within the defined project scope with the Project Manager or the H&S team to observe and document safety tasks.
Become familiar with Safe Work Practices, Safe Job Procedures, and hazard recognition techniques.
Assist with Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) administration, including minutes and follow-ups.
Support basic incident documentation processes.
Contribute to a positive safety culture by asking questions, sharing observations, and learning continuously.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS / ABILITIES
This opportunity is designated for Indigenous persons (First Nations, Inuit, or Métis) under a special program pursuant to Section 14 of the Ontario Human Rights Code.
The program is intended to support employment opportunities for Indigenous peoples in construction and occupational health and safety. Applicants must self-identify as Indigenous to be eligible. No prior experience or formal education in occupational health and safety is required.
