Job Title Finance Director (Salary $70,000 – $90,000)
Purpose of the Position
Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Finance Director provides strategic financial leadership and oversight for Mattagami First Nation. This position is responsible for directing all financial operations, ensuring long-term financial sustainability, supporting governance, and aligning fiscal management with the Nation’s strategic priorities and economic development goals.
The Finance Director oversees financial policy development, multi-year planning, risk management, compliance, and audit integrity while providing executive-level financial advice to leadership and Chief & Council.

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Financial Planning
• Develop and implement long-term financial strategies
• Lead multi-year financial forecasting and capital planning
• Advise leadership on financial risks and opportunities
• Support economic development initiatives with financial analysis
Financial Oversight & Reporting
• Ensure preparation of accurate monthly and annual consolidated financial statements
• Present financial reports to Executive Director and Chief & Council
• Monitor organizational financial performance across all departments
• Ensure funding agreements are properly managed and reported
Budget Development & Monitoring
• Lead annual budgeting process across all departments
• Monitor budget variances and recommend corrective action
• Ensure alignment between budgets and strategic plans
Policy Development & Compliance
• Develop and update financial policies and procedures
• Ensure compliance with funding agencies, legislation, and regulatory bodies
• Oversee financial controls and safeguard organizational assets
• Ensure adherence to Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) or applicable standards
Audit & Risk Management
• Lead and coordinate external audits
• Respond to audit findings and implement recommendations
• Identify and mitigate financial and operational risks
• Maintain insurance and financial risk protection strategies
• Assist with the Asset Management process for Mattagami First Nation
Leadership & Staff Development
• Directly supervise the Finance Team of Mattagami First Nation
• Provide mentorship, coaching, and performance management
• Support professional development within the finance team
• Promote a culture of accountability and collaboration
Organizational & Governance Support
• Attend leadership and governance meetings as required
• Provide financial analysis to support policy decisions
• Support grant applications, major projects, and funding proposals
• Participate in emergency response financial planning when required
Professional Responsibilities
• Maintain confidentiality of financial and personnel information
• Attend mandatory training and leadership development sessions
• Adhere to the Agreement of Professional Conduct
• Support organizational initiatives outside assigned duties when required
Required Skills
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
CPA designation required
Financial management experience is an asset
Senior leadership or supervisory role experience is an asset
Experience in First Nation governance and funding environments considered a strong asset
Strong knowledge of PSAS, funding contribution agreements, and government reporting requirements
Advanced proficiency in Sage Intacct is an asset
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel required
Exceptional analytical, strategic planning, and leadership skills
Excellent communication and presentation skills
