Position: Executive Director
Term: Permanent Full-Time

Role
Aakwiinowin Family Services (AFS) is seeking an experienced, visionary, and culturally grounded Executive Director to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for the organization. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will lead the implementation of AFS’s vision, strengthen organizational capacity, foster collaborative relationships with community partners.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide strategic leadership and organizational direction in partnership with the Board of Directors.
• Oversees the services and programs in accordance with Gakijiwanong Anishinaabe Nation Abinooji Ombigi’aawsowin Inakonigewin.
• Lead organizational planning, governance implementation, and operational excellence.
• Oversee human resources, workforce development, and succession planning.
• Manage organizational budgets, financial accountability, audits, and funding agreements.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with community members, Clans, Elders, government partners, and stakeholders.
• Knowledge of traditional and customary Anishinaabe family systems
• Working knowledge of traditional healing practices
• Ensure compliance with agency policies, contracts, applicable legislation, and accreditation standards.
• Identify growth opportunities, including new funding sources and program expansions.
• Promote culturally safe, community-centred, and trauma-informed service delivery.
• Represent AFS in negotiations, partnerships, and regional or provincial initiatives.
• Knowledge and experience in Anishinaabe law and traditional justice processes.
Qualifications
• Graduate degree in Human Services, Social Work, Law, Psychology, Indigenous Studies, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum ten (10) years of progressive leadership experience, including senior management within Indigenous organizations, child and family services, health, social services, or related sectors.
• Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, governance, financial management, policy development, and organizational leadership.
• Strong knowledge of Indigenous child and family services, First Nation governance, and culturally responsive service delivery.
• Experience managing multi-million-dollar budgets, funding agreements, and multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities to inspire and develop high-performing teams.
• Knowledge of Anishinaabe culture, values, traditions, and community engagement is considered a significant asset.
* Must have strong written reporting and communication skills
• Valid Canadian Driver’s Licence
• Successful Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
