Reporting to the Vineyard Manager, the Assistant Vineyard Manager plays a key role in the maintenance and operation of our 50-acre estate vineyard and nearby properties. This is a senior operational role requiring significant technical expertise in viticulture, the ability to lead a seasonal and permanent crew, and a demonstrated commitment to safety, sustainability and quality.
Key Responsibilities
• Assist in the planning and execution of all seasonal vineyard operations, including dormant pruning, training, suckering, shoot positioning, canopy management, crop thinning and harvest
• Supervise and direct a team of permanent and seasonal vineyard workers, and coordinate daily assignments with the Vineyard Manager
• Operate and maintain vineyard equipment including tractors, sprayers and other vineyard maintenance implements; coordinate preventative maintenance schedules
• Assist with irrigation management across systems
• Monitor and report vine health; implement integrated pest management strategies
• Upholding safe work practices in compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices
• Collaborate with the Vineyard Manager and Winemaker to align viticulture decisions with wine quality goals, including timing of harvest and block selection
• Ensure compliance with WorkSafeBC regulations and champion a safe working environment for all staff and visitors
• Assist in the development and monitoring of the annual vineyard budget
• Participate in cover crop, composting and other sustainable viticulture programs
• Other property and vineyard management activities, as necessary
We’re looking for someone who is passionate about viticulture and understands the requirements of sustainable winemaking. In addition to being legally able to work in Canada, the successful candidate will have:
• Extensive vineyard farming experience in a supervisory role
• Extensive equipment maintenance and operations experience
• Diploma or degree in agricultural management or a related field – or a combination of education and demonstrated hands-on experience
• Demonstrated knowledge of grapevine physiology and vine training systems
• Valid drivers’ licence and experience safely operating agricultural equipment
• Pesticide Applicator Licence
Preferred Qualifications
• Ability to speak Spanish is considered an asset
• Familiarity with the Okanagan Valley growing conditions, soils and climate
• WSET or other wine education certifications are considered an asset
Working Conditions
• This is a permanent, full-time role (40 hours per week standard; overtime required during harvest and other peak periods)
• Ability to work long and sometimes irregular hours in peak seasons
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical labour including lifting and bending for extended periods
• Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions on uneven terrain
• Seasonal schedule variation is expected; flexibility is required
Compensation & Benefits
• $56,000/year, commensurate with experience
• 3 weeks paid vacation
