SUMMARY
The Nigig Nibi Ki-win Gamik Society (“Nigig”) is an organization that works to affect the development, implementation, administration, and operation of family wellness programs. This includes prevention and family wellness supports and services in accordance with Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation’s child well-being law, Nigig Nibi Ki-win.
The Family Wellness & Respite Worker is responsible for assisting with the delivery of the Family Wellness Program; The Family Wellness & Respite Worker is responsible to assist with the on-going development of the Family Wellness Program in collaboration with the Family Wellness Department with a mind to ensuring holistic healing aligned with Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation (“AOPFN”) cultural values. The Family Wellness & Respite Worker will provide respite services to Algonquin families that support the family unit. The focus is on each family to address specific emotional, social and/or behavioural, physical, and spiritual needs. This position includes flexible shift work with evening and weekend hours.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Family Wellness Support Program
• Provides intake support though self and/or professional referral. In situations of family violence, trauma and families involved with the child welfare and youth justice systems.
• Provides intake support for families and/or individual family members.
• Provides brief intervention, crisis intervention and other supports.
• Provides referrals to supportive services to meet the individual’s need within Nigig, the community or external resources.
• Participates in training to learn facilitation skills, relevant training towards healing and helping to assist the community.
• Initiates and assists with the delivery of contemporary and culturally appropriate programs.
• Initiates and assists with programs and services to individual family members, families as a whole, groups and the community.
• Initiates and assists with cultural workshops, planning and coordinating and delivery
• Initiates and assists with planning sessions, clinics, presentations, workshops and a variety of activities that support family well being i.e. intergenerational violence and trauma, exposure to or witnessing violence, family wellness planning, sexual abuse, sexuality, behavior management, anger management, stress management, life skills, family planning, parenting skills, etc.
• Participates in the development and coordination of care plans.
• Provides systems navigation and advocacy.
• Monitors and evaluates family and/or individual family member care plans and providing follow-up.
2. Respite
• Assesses family needs, and develops and maintains a service plan for each family in conjunction with Nigig staff; working with children, parents, extended family, and local service providers.
• Provides access to programs for the development of parenting skills, including financial and food preparation and such other skills as may be required in providing for one’s family, as well as child development programs.
• Recommends and facilitates family supports including homemaking and in-home support, housing, transportation, daycare and childcare, educational supports.
• Facilitates access to medical and therapeutic supports, including in-home care supports.
• Coordinates weekly, or as needed, check-ins with clients via mutually agreed upon method of communication.
• Develops trusting relationships with families through regular visits and contact.
• Fosters independence through a holistic and person-centered approach.
• Reinforces wellness concepts and teach new skills to empower the families supported to thrive.
3. Collaborative Practice
• Assists with case management within the family wellness team.
• Works closely with Nigig staff to ensure comprehensive service delivery.
4. Community Development
• Identifies and prioritizes family wellness needs.
• Initiates and assists with the development of strategic plans and annualized work plans.
• Initiates and assists with the development and coordination of new programs and initiatives aimed at family wellness.
• Liaisons and networks with community and other family wellness services for the integration of new and existing services.
• Participates in all relevant meetings.
• Promotes community awareness of family wellness programs and services, including connection to others offered in community.
5. Administrative
• Implements tools to ensure evidence-based reporting.
• Assists with all administrative reporting requirements according to policy and the funding agent’s mandate.
• Prepares case progress reports as may be required by mandated service agencies and/or the courts.
6. Quality Management
• Participates in department meetings.
• Participates in cultural awareness and cultural sensitivity training.
• Participates in staff development initiatives and training requirements.
• Ensures all certifications are current.
• Reflects on current, and ensures that new programs, policies and procedures are developed and implemented in adherence to all relevant legislation and regulatory bodies.
7. Risk Management
• Participates in the development and updating of a comprehensive risk management plan.
• Participates in the training on the risk management plan.
• Medium level of risk management is required for this position, however, in exercising judgement and taking self-directed actions within the scope of this work – a level of risk is expected.
• Ensures thorough and compete protection of privacy, confidentiality and safeguarding of private and personal information for all clients and matters of sensitive nature. Careful judgement and vigilance are required in the use of social media and other media as these present risks for divulging personal information.
8. Other
• Performs other related duties as may be required by the Family Wellness Supervisor and Manager.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Due to the sensitive nature of personal information and potential interaction with individuals to whom services are being delivered, the Family Wellness & Respite Worker is required to keep all information confidential. The Family Wellness & Respite Worker position requires you to sit and stand for various periods of time. The Family Wellness & Respite Worker position may involve some travel as well as evening and weekend duties.

With the Family Wellness Supervisor and similar:
Receives direction and guidance; Collaborative relationship with respect to planning and prioritization; Guidance on required programs, services, and other resources.
With other staff:
Be a courteous and cooperative team player.
With Governmental Ministries and Agencies:
Represents and promotes the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation through Nigig; Maintains proper reporting relationships; Maintains awareness of all relevant policies and program changes.
With Other Communities and Affiliated Aboriginal and Indigenous Organizations:
Represents and promotes the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation through Nigig; exchanges information using judgement and following the policies of Nigig; keeps informed of the changes and trends in reporting and protocol that can be beneficial to the First Nation.
With the public:
Represents and promotes the interests of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation through Nigig; Works in a courteous, cooperative, respectful, positive, and proactive manner; Provides information using judgment and following the policies of Nigig; Provides assistance when required.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
1. Basic Requirements
• Post-secondary education related to social services, mental health, social work, child and youth worker with a minimum of one year of successful experience working with children, youth, families and groups, preferably in a First Nation setting.
• Able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
• A minimum of a valid class “G” driver’s license and access to a dependable vehicle.
• Experience with computer operations and software programs. Preferred programs include Windows, MS Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.
2. Rated Requirements
Knowledge:
• Experience working with the public
• Intergenerational violence and trauma in Indigenous communities.
• Algonquin Anishinàbeg culture, social structure and traditional approaches to helping and healing.
• Pikwakanagan’s community-based services and external resources.
• Knowledge and understanding of family’s dynamics, parenting techniques, and life skills.
• Experience with wholistic approach in delivery of overall family wellness.
• Knowledge if Nigig Nibi Ki-win and the Child and Family Services Act.
Abilities:
• Coordinate, plan and facilitate sessions, clinics, presentations, workshops and activities.
• Respond to brief crisis intervention.
• Narrative and statistical report writing;
• Research, analyze, conceptualize, organize and effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
• Proficient in the use of computers and software.
Personal Suitability:
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Able to work effectively in an inter-disciplinary team environment.
• Tact, discretion and a professional level of confidentiality.
• Possess a high degree of initiative, self-motivation, reliable and thorough.

3. Conditions of Employment
• An acceptable Criminal Records Check and a Vulnerable Sector Check; as required.
• Current Infant/Child CPR and advanced First Aid Certification;
• Proof of a minimum of a class “G” driver’s license and a Clear driver’s abstract.
• Able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
