VISION:
At the Ontario Native Women’s Association (ONWA), we celebrate and honour the safety and healing of Indigenous Women and Girls as they take up their leadership roles in the family, community, provincially, nationally and internationally for generations to come.
SCOPE:
Aakode’ewin – Courage for Change Program works to support women who are at risk of, entrenched in, or are survivors of human trafficking and sex trades, inclusive of trans and two-spirited women and girls. With a focus on Indigenous women Courage provides wrap around service through a culturally driven, trauma informed anti-oppressive lens.
The Courage Youth Outreach Worker (CYOW) engages and supports Indigenous youth ages 16 and 24 (inclusive) in and around the downtown Toronto area to promote and reinforce safety, healthy relationships, and overall positive health. The CYOW will work to develop and implement one-on-one and group engagement opportunities, educational material/opportunities, programing, and direct interventions which ensure vulnerable Indigenous youth build capacity, connections, identity, and self-esteem. The CYOW will meet with youth through person-to-person, voice-to-voice, email, social media, and other interactions which may occur in the community or neighborhood locations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
➡️ A minimum college diploma in Child and Youth Work, Social Services, or related field of studies.
➡️ A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience working with youth.
➡️ Experience independently developing and implementing youth programs.
➡️ Knowledge of and connection to spaces and service agencies in the location of service delivery with an emphasis on spaces and service agencies that specifically support Indigenous youth.
➡️ Experience developing and facilitating workshops for youth and service providers.
➡️ Excellent organizational and communication skills and an ability to follow through on assigned duties independently with strict deadlines.
➡️ Ability to plan, organize and manage time effectively.
➡️ Highly motivated individual with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
➡️ Capacity to solve problems and to see different perspectives.
➡️ Ability to network with other community agencies, services, and knowledge and experience working for Not-For-Profit Organizations.
➡️ Excellent written and oral communications, with emphasis on keen listening and ability to effectively interpret verbal communications and needs of prospective Community Members.
➡️ Experience working in the sector of Anti-Human Trafficking is an asset.
➡️ Must be dependable, able to follow instructions, respond to management direction and be able to improve performance through management feedback.
➡️ Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office; competency working with other databases.
➡️ Experience working with Indigenous Peoples, knowledge of Indigenous cultures and traditions.
➡️ Knowledge and understanding of current issues facing Indigenous Youth.
➡️ Working knowledge of MS Office Software, internet, and general office equipment.
➡️ Ability to speak an Indigenous Language is considered an asset.
➡️ Valid G Class Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle with appropriate 2-million dollar insurance.
➡️ Current valid vulnerable sector criminal records check.
➡️ Valid 1st Aid/CPR.
➡️ A cellular phone and internet access is required within this position.
➡️ Must be willing and able to work a flexible working from home arrangement if required. This may include a combination of virtual remote work in your home and in office arrangements. This will be based on operational needs and will be determined by the ONWA.
➡️ Ability/willingness to travel and to work flexible hours.
