About the role
Join the Multi-Unit Policy and Operations team in the position of Senior Specialist, Underwriting (Coach, Multi-Unit). In this role, you will focus on the coaching, review, and approval of complex multi-unit mortgage loan insurance applications. You will lead risk management analysis, decisions and recommendations for approval for the most complex scenarios related to underwriting, file-specific risk mitigation, optimizing client service and achieving corporate objectives. You will structure solutions for the most complex multi-unit applications and identify risks likely uncommon to CMHC and provide creative solutions. This will help us make housing affordable for everyone in Canada.
This is a temporary position until December 31st, 2025, with possibility of extension.
What you’ll do:
Coordinate the design and delivery of new and existing learning, specialized development programs and training materials for staff, including communications, training and coaching, functional guidance, and role specific training for underwriters at multiple levels of seniority.
Provide expert opinion on the effective and efficient transactional delivery of multi-unit mortgage loan insurance, while adhering to the program’s policies and operational procedures.
Provide directional guidance to peers, shares best practices and approves risk recommendations within financial authority limits, as applicable.
Negotiate and navigate through challenging politically sensitive issues, while adhering to all relevant policies and procedures.
Exercise prudence and diligence to ensure team members comply with all relevant internal policies and procedures applicable to the function, often pushing risk appetite beyond existing boundaries.
Seek out additional expertise to form unique positions to address previously not encountered financial risk scenarios.
Collaborate with Commercial Solutions Team to manage and maintain complex and sophisticated external client relationships.
Skills in motivating, understanding, and/or developing people are critical to the achievement of results through others.
What you should have:
A minimum of seven years of prior relevant experience in underwriting.
An Undergraduate degree in a related field such as business, finance, or commerce.
A strong knowledge of procedures, policies, and regulations of risk management.
A strong knowledge of multi-unit mortgage loan insurance, lending, real estate (including non-housing related commercial), financial markets, and credit risk analysis.
The ability to take initiative and work independently to develop and utilize a network within CMHC.
Strong oral and written communication skills in both official languages (English & French) including presentation, persuasion, negotiation and influencing skills.
A commitment to demonstrating CMHC values.
It would be great if you also had:
Successful completion of a professional association designation such as being Certified in Real Estate Finance (CRF), Certified Property Management (CPM), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Chartered Accountant (CA) or Accredited Appraiser Canadian Institute (AACI).
Excellent relationship management skills and demonstrated development and coaching abilities.
