Job Description: Design, build, and test engineering hardware to support the product development of the PARS (Photo Absorption Remote Sensing) Microscope (i.e, the “Device”) for the analysis of tissue in the field of Histology. The PARS device is a clinical instrument that serve as medical diagnostic tool in Life Sciences Labs as well as Pathology Labs.
Detailed Job Description:
• Role will involve designing and testing optical, opto-mechanical, and electro-mechanics (e.g., MEMs, stages, other scanners) modules to be used in engineering prototype of the device eventually leading to production units
• Majority of the design work will be carried out in Solidworks
• Work closely with optical engineers on system design to ensure optical, mechanical, and electrical sub-system compatibility
• Optical inspection and optical testing of various components that will be in the device (e.g., lens inspection, fixture design, laser alignment, MEMs inspection, MEMs characterization)
• Role will also involve the preparation and handling of samples (either on FFPE slides or fresh tissue) and designing the sample interface to the device
• Installing samples in the system, scanning whole slide images, and prepping data to be provided to the AI team for colourization
• Work closely with research scientists, software, and AI teams in day-to-day activities
• Role will be heavily involved in the specification and documentation of product architecture for the product development cycle for both internal and external vendor collaborations
• Development of SOPs for operating of the device or submodules of the device
• Work with and manage external vendors that will deliver production components and/or submodules of the device
• Modify or install prototypes and early production devices at various locations to support partnership collaborations, trials, and/or demos.
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s Degree: A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, with a preference for candidates who have specialized in Biomedical Engineering.
• Laser Expertise: Practical experience working with lasers is required. Familiarity with the role and responsibilities of a Laser Safety Officer (LSO) is considered an advantage.
• CAD Proficiency: A minimum of two years of experience in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software is essential. Proficiency in SolidWorks is preferred, though expertise in other CAD programs will also be considered.
• Hands on Building Experience: Basic machine shop experience (e.g., mill, drill press, lathe, tapping) is a requirement for prototype building
• Optical Alignment: A solid working knowledge of optical alignment techniques and optomechanics are necessary for success in this role.
• Metrology Tools: Candidates should have hands-on experience with the operation of metrology tools.
• Histology Knowledge: A basic understanding of histology is required.
